“Nobility of spirit has more to do with simplicity than ostentation, wisdom rather than wealth, commitment rather than ambition.” -- Riccardo Muti
In winter, when the landscape reflects all light, the silver greys and whites of the woodland margins serve to spotlight this noble red bird… and we take notice. As our senses realign for the seasonal differences, the brilliant vermilion catches our eye where there is little other color. From ancient days, the plumage of the northern cardinal was compared to the robes of higher order Roman Catholic priests; thus, both the scientific name and the common name of the red bird became “the cardinal”.
Such a spectacular bird! The cardinal has played a significant role in mythology and literature for centuries, especially in spirituality. This bird species symbolizes hope, life, and restoration. It seemed fitting to paint this winter soldier as a wish for a peaceful and joyous New Year.
